Semillas Fitó wins at the Forbes–UBS Sustainability Awards 2025 for its contribution to more sustainable agriculture

Semillas Fitó has been awarded in the Food Industry category at the Forbes–UBS Sustainability Awards 2025 for its project “Vegetable varieties to reduce the ecological footprint of agriculture.” The recognition took place on October 20 in Madrid and highlights family businesses and SMEs leading sustainable strategies in Spain.
Elisabet Fitó, Corporate Director at Semillas Fitó, received the award on behalf of the company, accompanied by Juan Jesús Narváez, Head of Operational Excellence and member of the Sustainability Committee.
A pioneering project to measure the environmental impact of vegetable varieties
The jury especially valued the innovative methodology developed by Fitó in collaboration with the Institut Cerdà to assess the environmental impact of different horticultural varieties. Based on the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) approach promoted by the European Commission, the system quantifies key indicators such as water footprint, energy use, fertilizers and plant protection products, allowing the comparison of genetic solutions.
Already applied to crops such as pepper and eggplant in Almería greenhouses, this tool helps farmers and other actors in the agri-food chain choose varieties with better environmental performance without compromising yield or quality.
Leading sustainable innovation
With this methodology, Fitó becomes the first company in the horticultural sector to apply an environmental calculation system at the varietal level, reinforcing its commitment to transparency, continuous improvement, and the development of objective tools that drive more sustainable agriculture.
